It has faster focusing, better image quality, wider aperture that offers better quality in low light. It has two more diaphragm blades that allows the background out of focus highlights to look more rounded and less octagonal. The new lens only zooms to 20mm at the long end, rather than 24mm on the prior model, though it does go slightly wider to 10mm rather than 11mm. This is a welcome tradeoff, as most people looking to buy this optic will likely have access to a 24mm focal length (with a lens like the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L or Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L). Having a Contenders for my general purpose zoom were: RF 24-105 F4, 24-70 F2.8, 24-240mm. The EFS 15-85mm had shown me I could manage with an F4 lens and the wide zoom range was useful.
